Cummins Approves Unblended Renewable Diesel for Industrial High-Horsepower Engines
Cummins Inc, in collaboration with North Hauler Joint Stock Co., Ltd. (NHL), a prominent mining truck manufacturer in China, has introduced its diesel hybrid solution, marking a significant step forward in the decarbonization efforts for industrial sectors.
The hybrid NHL NTH260, boasting a 220 metric ton payload capacity, was manufactured in January and is set to undergo field testing at Baiyun Iron Mine of Baogang Group, China, starting in March. Utilizing Cummins' advanced hybrid system, the truck's engine has been downsized from the previous 2,500HP QSK60 to the current 2,000HP two-stage QSK50, showcasing optimization in power solutions.
Jenny Bush, President of Cummins Power Systems, expressed excitement about achieving this milestone, emphasizing the company's commitment to advancing bridge technologies and offering innovative decarbonization solutions to mining clients. The commissioning ceremony, held in NHL's industrial park in Bautou, China, was attended by key leaders from Cummins Power Systems China.
The truck is anticipated to deliver outstanding total cost of ownership benefits, attributed to initial cost advantages, enhanced fuel efficiency, and an extended engine service life. The improvement in fuel efficiency is directly linked to reductions in emissions and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. With advanced hybrid technology and integration of battery technology and controls, there is potential to enhance fuel efficiency by up to 30%, contingent upon the mine profile and technological advancements.
“Our partnership with Cummins spans 40 years and advancing the hybridization of our equipment is another demonstration of what we can accomplish together for the benefit of miners globally,” said Haiquan Guo, General Manager, NHL. NHL produces trucks with payload range from 35 to 360 metric tons, with Cummins as the standard engine configuration."
“We are intent on enabling multiple pathways to carbon neutrality for industrial markets, including both first-fit and retrofit solutions,” said Molly Puga, Cummins Power Systems Executive Director of Strategy, Digital and Product Planning. “It’s partnerships with our customers like NHL and Baiyun Iron Mine that will accelerate product availability in the market and make both near- and long-term carbon reduction goals attainable.”
In 2023, Cummins declared its endorsement for the utilization of unblended renewable diesel across all its industrial high-horsepower engines.
