Green spaces, whether they feature turfgrass, native plants, or trees, are crucial for the environment. According to the Lawn Institute, these areas are key for recreation, relaxation, and social interaction, promoting a sense of community and well-being.
Record Heat Wave
This summer, Phoenix, Arizona set a new record, enduring 113 consecutive days of triple-digit temperatures. Even in extreme heat, it’s important for residents to have spaces where they can enjoy the outdoors, particularly green areas that offer a cooler alternative to concrete and asphalt.
Introducing More Trees
Every effort to enhance green spaces counts. In response to the urban heat island effect, where neighborhoods experience higher temperatures due to a lack of greenery, ScottsMiracle-Gro teamed up with the City of Phoenix and Project EverGreen to provide additional shade. As part of this initiative, Barrios Unidos Park received 50 newly planted trees.
On October 23, a volunteer event at the park invited the public to participate, with notable attendance from Phoenix District 8 Councilwoman Kesha Hodge Washington.
Collaborative Planting Effort
ScottsMiracle-Gro employees, alongside other local volunteers, planted the trees at the park with support from the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department and the Office of Heat Response and Mitigation. While the fight against rising temperatures continues, the focus remains on the positive impact that green spaces can have in mitigating heat.
