Duke Energy's Emergency Preparedness Grant Program Enhances Resiliency for Nonprofits and Government Entities

06/21/2023

As the hurricane season commences, emergency managers and first responders shift their attention to the tropical regions, diligently readying their communities for potential consequences arising from extreme weather.

Duke Energy, too, is making preparations and expressing solidarity with the communities in South Carolina. They have recently announced a generous sum of $500,000 in microgrants aimed at enhancing community resilience, empowering residents to better prepare for and rebound from the destructive impacts of significant weather occurrences.

“Preparing communities to respond to severe weather impacts begins at the local level,” said Mike Callahan, Duke Energy’s South Carolina state president.

“We are committed to keeping South Carolina’s resiliency and economy strong. These grants will help provide fellow first responders with the tools and training to handle whatever Mother Nature throws our way.”

Duke Energy's Emergency Preparedness and Storm Resiliency Grant Program was created to assist organizations involved in emergency preparedness by enhancing their ability to withstand such events through advanced preparation, planning, equipment, and training. Applicants had the opportunity to request funds of up to $20,000. A total of 32 non-profit organizations and governmental entities across the state were selected to receive grants.

Testimonials:
  • "As we approach the hurricane season, EMS providers and emergency managers statewide are making thorough preparations to ensure our coastal areas are well-equipped. This funding opportunity will enable us to conduct a comprehensive gap analysis, resulting in stronger emergency medical services readiness to respond to natural disasters," said Mandy Gattis, Project Director of the South Carolina EMS Association.
  • "We are extremely thankful for the grant provided by Duke Energy. The funds will be utilized to acquire essential equipment and training, enabling us to deliver a higher level of service to the residents of Florence and the surrounding region," said Shannon Tanner, Fire Chief of the City of Florence Fire Department.
  • "We are delighted to receive a grant from the Duke Energy Foundation, which will enable us to purchase a MERT trailer. This trailer will facilitate the quick closure of roads without having to take a fire truck out of service, thereby creating a safer environment for our citizens and first responders," said Steve Holmes, Greenwood County Fire Chief.
