The Arbor Day Foundation has reached 95% of U.S. neighborhoods with tree-planting efforts since 2022, according to the nonprofit’s community tracking data. These initiatives have included local tree plantings and distributions, purchasing trees from nurseries, and shipping trees to the organization’s over one million members.
“This achievement highlights the vast network we have built over the past 50 years,” said Dan Lambe, CEO of the Arbor Day Foundation. “It reflects the dedication of our members who plant trees at home, online customers receiving trees, corporate partners supporting meaningful projects, and local volunteers actively planting. Knowing that tree advocates are bringing these benefits to the majority of U.S. neighborhoods is inspiring. Now, we aim to expand our reach, enhance our impact, and prioritize efforts in underserved communities.”
With around 80,000 neighborhoods in the U.S., as recorded in the 2020 Census, the Arbor Day Foundation has engaged with 95%, particularly emphasizing the 23,500 neighborhoods with the greatest need.
Research indicates that trees provide numerous benefits, extending beyond individual yards to entire communities. In areas with low tree coverage, they help mitigate heat-related illnesses, improve respiratory health, and enhance mental well-being.
The Foundation is striving to plant 500 million trees by June 2027, with a particular focus on neighborhoods and forests in need. Launched in 2022, this initiative has led to more precise tracking to ensure resources are directed where trees can have the greatest impact.
