On Friday, June 21, a tragic event occurred at the Mad Butcher grocery store in Fordyce, Arkansas, a small town of 3,200 people located 65 miles from Little Rock. An armed individual opened fire, injuring 13 people, including two police officers, and tragically taking the lives of four.
In response, the Georgia-Pacific OSB facility in Fordyce quickly stepped in to provide essential support for its employees and the local community. As part of Koch Industries, Georgia-Pacific reached out to the Koch Crisis Center, utilizing resources from Spring Health, an employee assistance program (EAP). By the following Monday, Spring Health counselors were on-site to offer both group and individual sessions, as well as provide EAP hotline details for ongoing mental health support. Spring Health, which partners with major companies worldwide, offers specialized mental health services tailored to the needs of employees and their families.
"Our community endured an unthinkable act of violence on June 21. In the aftermath, we saw the community unite to support, volunteer, and care for those affected by this tragedy," said Craig Sheek, plant manager of Georgia-Pacific's Fordyce OSB facility. "We are honored to be part of this community, especially the close-knit one within our plant."
"Within an hour of the crisis, we had already reached out to the Spring Health Employee Assistance Program, a free benefit provided by Koch for our employees and their families. The EAP responded by dispatching a team of five licensed counselors to be on-site early on Monday, June 24, providing individual sessions and group crisis support," said Corina Schindel, HR business partner at Georgia-Pacific’s Fordyce OSB Mill. "Fordyce is a town of resilience and unity, and we take pride in being part of an organization that prioritizes community engagement and meaningful relationships."
In July, Georgia-Pacific’s Fordyce facility partnered with FBT Bank & Mortgage, donating $20,000 to a fund established for victims of the shooting. “We were privileged to welcome representatives from Georgia-Pacific to our bank on July 29, where we assisted in distributing the $20,000 donation to the affected families,” said Jim Hulse, president and CEO of FBT Bank & Mortgage. "We are grateful for Georgia-Pacific's generosity and for their ongoing presence in our community."
At Georgia-Pacific, people are at the center of everything we do. Whether in times of growth or during moments of crisis, we are committed to supporting and strengthening the communities we serve.
