Volunteers from Atlantic City Electric, KABOOM!, Gateway Community Action Partnership, the Borough of Paulsboro, and local residents collaborated to bring a playground designed by children and built by the community to life at West Buck Street Park in Paulsboro, New Jersey. On April 10, hundreds of volunteers gathered for a one-day effort to construct this playground, representing a significant step forward in ensuring that every child has access to a place to play. This initiative, driven by community spirit, provided a cutting-edge playground for children to enjoy year after year.
Doug Mokoid, Region President of Atlantic City Electric, expressed pride in the company's commitment to the communities it serves and the active involvement of its employees in community initiatives. Over 100 volunteers from Atlantic City Electric, including members of IBEW Local 210, participated in the day-long build, bringing to fruition the design ideas conceived by local children during a "Design Day" held in January 2024.
Mayor John Giovannitti of Paulsboro emphasized the significance of the West Buck Street Playground to the neighborhood and the town's residents, expressing excitement about the collaborative effort with KABOOM!, Gateway CAP, and Atlantic City Electric to create a new recreational space. This endeavor aims to foster community unity and provide a safe and enjoyable environment for families to gather and play.
The project aligns with KABOOM!'s nationwide mission to address disparities in access to play spaces, particularly among children of color, ensuring that all children can benefit from the physical, social, and mental health advantages of play. Lysa Ratliff, CEO of KABOOM!, highlighted the importance of playgrounds in childhood development and expressed enthusiasm for the partnership in building the new playspace on West Buck Street.
Moreover, the playground build serves as the initial phase of a broader revitalization plan for the Paulsboro community. It marks the beginning of Gateway Community Action Partnership's efforts under the Neighborhood Revitalization Planning Grant received in December 2023. This initiative prioritizes community-driven projects, such as the playground construction, to support comprehensive, equity-focused community development plans.
"This represents more than just an investment in swings and slides; it symbolizes a dedication to the well-being, joy and unity of our local community. It reflects our profound commitment to fostering secure, welcoming and interactive spaces that support the growth of our children, strengthen family bonds and promote neighborly connections,” said Edward Bethea, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Gateway Community Action Partnership.
“We must also emphasize that this new playground will act as a key catalyst for the Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative process in the Paulsboro area."
