MSC Marie Docks at DP World Caucedo: A Milestone in Dominican Trade

12/03/2024

DP World, a global frontrunner in logistics and supply chain management, welcomed the MSC Marie, an Ultra-Large Container Vessel (ULCV), at the Port of Caucedo. This marks the largest ship to ever dock in the Dominican Republic, reinforcing the nation's role as a strategic logistics hub in the Americas.

The MSC Marie, owned by the Mediterranean Shipping Company, arrived from Panama on November 10, 2024. Measuring 366 meters long and 51 meters wide, with a carrying capacity of 17,644 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), its arrival represents a significant boost for regional trade.

Manuel Martínez, CEO of DP World Dominican Republic, highlighted the achievement: “This milestone showcases the advanced capabilities DP World brings to the sector and aligns with the Dominican Republic’s trade growth ambitions, leveraging our strategic location with access to sea, air, and land transport.”

The vessel’s docking was facilitated by DP World’s $700 million expansion of the Port of Caucedo. This development increased the terminal’s annual capacity from 1.4 million to 2.5 million TEUs and extended the main dock by 450 meters. The port now features four berths with a depth of 17 meters, enabling it to handle ULCVs like the MSC Marie.

The investment also included state-of-the-art equipment, such as four super-post-Panamax cranes and 10 additional rubber-tired gantries (RTGs), expanding the terminal’s fleet to 32 RTGs and 10 gantry cranes.

The arrival of the MSC Marie underscores DP World’s dedication to sustainability and innovation. Thanks to its multi-phase electrification initiative, the vessel was serviced using fully electric equipment, including cranes and internal transfer vehicles (ITVs). This aligns with DP World's goal of achieving net-zero emissions across its operations by 2050.

“Our commitment to sustainability is unwavering,” Martínez added. “Using 100% electric equipment for the MSC Marie’s operations demonstrates our focus on reducing environmental impact while advancing sustainable logistics.”

With connections to 51 ports worldwide and regular routes to 12 Asian ports, the Port of Caucedo is a vital gateway for importers and exporters. DP World’s contributions to the Dominican Republic’s logistics sector were recognized with the Port Industry Excellence Award in 2023, underscoring its alignment with the government’s vision of becoming the leading logistics hub in the Americas.
