Enhancing Mental Health Awareness: 988 Lifeline Signs Installed Across 1,450 U.S. Shopping Centers

05/16/2024

Regency Centers is delighted to collaborate with 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, Vibrant Emotional Health, and six other owners of open-air shopping centers - Brixmor Property Group, Kimco Realty, Kite Realty Group, Peterson Companies, Sterling Organization, and Urban Edge Properties. Together, we're installing over 8,400 "Signs of HOPE" across 1,450 shopping centers spanning 40 U.S. states.

These signs, funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), aim to raise awareness and educate customers about mental and emotional well-being. They prominently display information on how to access the 988 Lifeline, ensuring visibility at all times.

Dr. Tia Dole, Chief 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline Officer at Vibrant Emotional Health, expressed gratitude for these partnerships, emphasizing the goal of informing and educating individuals about the 988 Lifeline services. The aim is to enhance utilization of mental health resources within communities and reduce the stigma associated with seeking support.

The 988 Lifeline comprises a national network of over 215 local crisis centers, offering 24/7 emotional support via phone, text, and chat. Vibrant is dedicated to expanding the visibility of the 988 Lifeline and eradicating stigmas surrounding behavioral health care.

This initiative is expected to reach a substantial number of people annually, given that 251 million individuals make 4.2 billion visits to these shopping centers each year, with 42% of the U.S. population living within 5 miles of the combined property portfolio.

Installation of the weather-resistant metal signs, sized 12" x 18", primarily on parking lot light poles, commenced in September and is slated for full completion by the end of 2024. These signs serve as a constant reminder of the various avenues available to access the 988 Lifeline and its essential mental health services.

Jan Hanak, Vice President of Marketing and Communications at Regency, emphasized the company's commitment to community engagement, stating pride in joining other open-air shopping centers in spreading awareness about the critical services offered by 988 within our neighborhoods.
