Risk Assessment Failure Leads Syngenta To Pay A Heavy Fine
Dailycsr.com – 21 March 2016 – Syngenta, an international “agrochemical firm” has been subject to a heavy fine. The company has a plant at Huddersfield, wherein a technician surveying maintenance related issue “unintentionally opened a valve on top of an isotanker”, causing a release of “herbicide paraquat dichloride” solution.
The amount of solution released has been estimated between “3.5 and 3.8 tonnes”, while according to the inspector of HSE, Angus Robbins Syngenta failed to take a proper assessment of the risk related to the valve being opened when the tank still remained “under pressure”.
The above mentioned failure has pleaded Syngenta guilty of breaching the “Regulation 4 of the Control of Major Accident Hazards Regulations 1999 and Regulation 5(1) of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations”. Consequently, on the 16th of March 2016, the company was ordered to pay a fine amount of “£13,041” as cost charges besides other additional amount leading up to a total amount of “£200,000”. The same order has been issued from the Leeds Crown Court.
