Dailycsr.com – 04 January 2016 – United Nations hosted the “international sportswear brand” along with the latter’s partner “Parley for the Oceans”, at New York City’s General Assembly Hall, wherein the duo presented their “'Oceans. Climate. Life.'” Programme.
A press conference was organised in the event wherein the collaboration between Adidas Group and Parley was discussed at length. The founder of Parley, Cyrill Gutsch along with the “Executive Board Member for Global Brands” at Adidas Group, Eric Liedtke was present to address the press gathering, whereby both the companies showcased their “prototype shoe”.
The prototype trainer sports an “upper part” that is fabricated out of “strands and filaments reclaimed and recycled from ocean waste and illegal deep-sea gillnets”. Sea Shepherd is an affiliate of Parley that pursued an eleven days’ expedition and tracked down “an illegal poaching vessel” that was located “off the coast of West Africa” and retrieved the gillnets.
The demonstration of the prototype gives the consumers a glimpse of the work that being done by Adidas and Parley. Moreover, it sets an expectation level among the buyers who are waiting for the product to hit the market “in terms of ready-to-wear ocean plastic products”. In Liedtke’s words:
"We are incredibly excited to join Parley for the Oceans as they bring the cause of the oceans to the attention of the United Nations. Adidas has long been a leader in sustainability, but this partnership allows us to tap into new areas and create innovative materials and products for our athletes."
While Gutsch adds:
"Our objective is to boost public awareness and to inspire new collaborations that can contribute to protect and preserve the oceans. We are extremely proud that Adidas is joining us in this mission and is putting its creative force behind this partnership to show that it is possible to turn ocean plastic into something cool."
