SEE, formerly known as Sealed Air, has introduced a paper-based bottom web aimed at assisting food processors and retailers in reducing their reliance on plastic and meeting the growing consumer preference for paper-based packaging. The newly unveiled CRYOVAC brand Barrier Formable Paper, composed of 90% FSC-certified fibers, is designed to minimize plastic usage by 77% in bottom web packaging compared to a PET/PE bottom web.
This innovative paper is suitable for use with both Vacuum Skin Packaging (VSP) and Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) top webs, as stated by SEE. Additionally, it is compatible with CRYOVAC brand Darfresh vacuum skin films, ensuring secure product placement and preventing movement within the packaging. The bottom web is recyclable with paper when local recycling services are available, adhering to Aticelca 501 UNI 11743 pass levels.
Specifically engineered for compatibility with various rollstock, thermoforming, and VSP equipment, the paper is targeted at packaging applications for fresh, smoked, and processed meats, as well as fish and seafood, cheese, and alternative proteins. It is offered in both white and kraft colors.
A representative from SEE noted, "There is a noticeable trend among food businesses to reassess packaging materials, aiming to enhance circularity, reduce plastic usage, and meet consumer expectations for paper-based alternatives. CRYOVAC Brand Barrier Formable Paper addresses all these concerns, providing processors with a practical, easily integrated, and sustainable packaging solution."
Another representative emphasized, "Our latest paper-based food packaging solution upholds the superior barrier protection synonymous with the CRYOVAC brand range. With exceptional oxygen and barrier performance, it keeps food fresher for longer, extending shelf life and contributing to a reduced environmental footprint through decreased spoilage and wastage."
“CRYOVAC brand Barrier Formable Paper is designed to help retailers drive sales. Its composition of 90% renewable fibres can appeal to sustainability-conscious shoppers, while virtually leak-proof seals help improve product presentation and deliver optimum taste, moisture, freshness and texture. The bottom-web is also easy-open to meet consumer demand for convenience.”
The latest advancements come after SEE unveiled the BubbleWrap Brand inflatable air pillows, featuring at least 95% recycled plastic content, and introduced an automated vertical form-fill-seal packaging system designed for liquids. Additionally, SEE's TempGuard insulated bag for chilled food items earned recognition as a finalist in the commercialized Recyclable Packaging category at the Sustainability Awards 2023.
