Duke Energy Offers $4.6M in Aid for Low-Income Families' Summer Energy Costs

08/26/2024

To assist low-income families in reducing their energy expenses this summer, Duke Energy is offering over $4.6 million in financial aid through its Share the Light Fund.

"As temperatures rise, these funds will provide crucial support to those who need it the most," said Kendal Bowman, President of Duke Energy North Carolina. "We take pride in the impact the Share the Light Fund has made in our community over the past four decades."

Duke Energy collaborates with more than 100 agencies across North Carolina to distribute these funds to eligible customers, helping them with energy bills, deposits, and reconnection or connection fees. Individuals can contact their local agencies to determine their eligibility. A list of service providers by county is available here.

In the past five years, Duke Energy shareholders, employees, customers, and the Duke Energy Foundation have contributed more than $19.7 million to the Share the Light Fund, assisting over 66,000 households in North Carolina.

Operation Fan Heat Relief
As part of the Share the Light Fund, Duke Energy allocates $80,000 annually to North Carolina's Operation Fan Heat Relief program. This initiative provides free fans to vulnerable older adults and adults with disabilities at risk of heat-related illnesses. The North Carolina Division of Aging and Adult Services manages the distribution of funds to Agencies on Aging and local providers, who then distribute fans from May 1 through October 31.

Savings Programs and Assistance
Duke Energy offers a variety of energy assistance programs and tools to help customers reduce their bills, including:
