Sysco Toronto Legacy Space: Celebrating Indigenous Reconciliation and Community Empowerment
This morning marked the inauguration of the Sysco Toronto Legacy Space, established through Sysco Ontario’s five-year partnership with The Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund. The Legacy Space showcases a stunning hand-painted mural by Hannah Sage LaForme from the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, along with a cozy library nook filled with resources and literature focused on meaningful reconciliation and education.
We were privileged to have Elder Garry Sault of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation commence the celebration with words, song, and a smudging ceremony. Kayleigh O'Connor from The DWF followed, highlighting their dedication to enhancing the lives of First Peoples in Canada. Tim Cameron, President of Sysco Ontario, spoke about Sysco Canada Inc.’s pledge to reconciliation and the Legacy Space program, emphasizing our own initiatives in this regard.
To support and uplift Indigenous businesses, we served refreshments from White Buffalo Coffee Company, Bangin Bannock, and Rad Jamz & Preserves.
We extend our gratitude to the Circle Ontario team for forging this partnership, enhancing our commitment to reconciliation and collaboration with Indigenous communities. We also thank the DWF team for their meaningful contributions to the development of this Legacy Space and the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, particularly Elder Garry and artist Hannah Sage LaForme, for their invaluable teachings and wisdom.
On Saturday, September 28, CTV Toronto showcased the Sysco Toronto Legacy Space in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, featuring insights from artist Hannah LaForme, Elder Garry Sault, and Jason Welter, VP of HR at Sysco International Americas.
