Biomimicry Institute Launches 10-Year Strategy for a Nature Positive Future at New York Climate Week

09/27/2024

The Biomimicry Institute, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting a Nature Positive, inclusive, and regenerative world inspired by nature's brilliance, has announced its ambitious 10-year strategy during New York Climate Week.

Amanda Sturgeon, the CEO of The Biomimicry Institute, stated, “Our strategic plan recognizes the urgent environmental and societal challenges we face today, yet we approach these issues with a sense of optimism and enthusiasm. We believe biomimicry can significantly contribute to creating a Nature Positive future, where our solutions not only tackle these challenges but do so with joy and hope, harmonizing human systems with nature’s wisdom.”

This new strategy targets three major global challenges: climate change and biodiversity loss, the disconnect between humans and nature, and the widespread ‘take-make-waste’ culture. The Biomimicry Institute aims to leverage natural strategies, encouraging human systems to learn from living organisms to develop innovative and sustainable solutions. The organization’s initiatives and the AskNature Hive platform support this mission by allowing professionals in various fields—such as business, design, innovation, and education—to incorporate nature’s genius into their efforts to address urgent global issues.

At New York Climate Week, the Institute will present its 10-year strategy at an engaging event hosted at the COOKFOX Architects Office. Alongside the strategy, a new website will be launched to highlight this vision and provide a comprehensive overview of the future of biomimicry and its role in fostering a sustainable world.

“This strategy marks a significant advancement for the Biomimicry Institute, enhancing our mission to inspire and empower individuals to design in harmony with nature, creating a future where human systems support and nurture the natural world,” remarked Kent Snyder, Board President of the Biomimicry Institute.

Looking ahead to 2035, the Institute aims to achieve several transformative outcomes through its strategy. Nature-inspired insights will guide the shift toward a Nature Positive future. Human-created environments and working landscapes will offer ecological benefits similar to those of healthy ecosystems. Nature-based solutions will become fundamental in addressing climate change and biodiversity loss, while new materials and processes inspired by nature will promote the development of a regenerative economy. Additionally, by merging Indigenous wisdom with Western science, the Institute seeks to restore humanity’s connection to and appreciation of nature.
